The final round of provincial English eloquence contest for high school students school year 2020-2021

In order to carry out the guidance of Ministry of Education and Training on improving the quality of teaching and learning English in schools by innovating the forms of organizing teaching, innovating testing and assessment, learning in company with using the language and developing ommunication skill, on March 30th, 2021 at Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted, the Department of Education and Training held the final round of provincial English eloquence contest for high school students, school year 2020-2021. There were 170 candidates from 37 high schools who had excellently passed chool contests to attend the provincial contest. The candidates took 2 rounds: preliminary round and final round. In the premilinary round, the candidates were tested in listening, reading comprehension, writing and language knowledge. Those who got the highest grades were chosen to attend the final round. In the final round, each candidate drew lots and presented a topic related to secondary ducation program.

 

Attending and making a speech to direct the contest, Mr. Dang Phuoc My, deputy director of the Department of Education and Training, chairman of the examiner board, emphasized the importance of English in daily life and asserted that English is the key to future jobs. He also appreciated the preparation and organization of school English eloquence contests at schools, which motivated many other students to use English. In addition, chairman of the examiner board encouraged and wished the candidates attending the final round to get the highest results.

 

There were 45 out of 170 excellent candidates attending the final round. Each candidate had 5 minutes to prepare for the topic choosen by lot. The contest’s topics were various: reality experience, education, culture, reading culture, youth activities, global warming, the relationship between success and diligence, future jobs, traffic, cultural identity, life skills, urbanization…After drawing lots and prepare for the topic within 5 minutes, the candidates had 3-4 minutes to present their ideas to the audience and the examiners. In the final round, a lot of candidates who showed their confidence, intelligence, wide social knowledge with their clever and focused replies satisfied the audience and persuaded the examiners. Forty-five candidates coming from different areas: remote areas, upland areas, distant areas, and city centre…made interesting presentations which attracted the audience’s attention and satisfied the examiners.

 

The contest proved that the gap in quality of teaching and learning English at schools in the province has been narrowed. The contest was a good opportunity for students to express their ability, viewpoint, courage about urgent issues in society, and also a chance for them to prove themselves. The examiners were satisfied when English quality of the candidates was equal and higher than that of last year contest with proper mature thoughts and opinions. Many parents, candidates, and the audience were more excited when the contest was led gracefully, smartly, exactly and attractively by MC Dang Thu Thao, a student of specialized English class 12A1, Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted (Gold medal in English of the national merit competition, school year 2020-2021).

 

The contest took place seriously, equally, objectively, in accordance with procedures and regulations with the evaluation of good examiners: Associate professor, PhD Truong Vien, PhD Phan Quynh Nhu of College of Foreign Languages, Hue University, Ms Michalle Ronelle Gouws from AMA English Centre, Hue. All the candidates were satisfied with their results after the contest. On behalf of the examiner board, Associate professor, PhD Truong Vien commented and evaluated strong and weak points of the candidates and proposed ways to remedy the shortcomings in order for the candidates to better their English ability.

 

The final round of provincial English eloquence contest for high school students, school year 2020-2021 came to an end with 45 awards including 02 first prizes, 11 second prizes, 14 third prizes, and 18 consolation prizes. The first prizes were won by Nguyen Manh Dung, a student of specialized Chemistry class, grade 11, Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted  and Nguyen Anh Cao Ky, a student of class 11D1, Hai Ba Trung high school.

 

The contest brought many good memories to the candidates, audience, examiners and organizers, encouraged studiousness, spread love and language beauty among many people, and helped the candidates to make good preparations for the future and prospective career.
